Last week we headed to downtown Sanford for date night. We strolled around the charming downtown a bit before heading to Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café for a rousing dinner and then a quiet nightcap at a the charming Mexican restaurant, La Sirena Gorda.

Downtown Sanford

Downtown Sanford is a quaint old Florida town with a variety of unique stores – from a homebrew shop to art galleries, to a unique furniture store/bar and strictly local restaurants with easy access from I-4. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun without a single fast food restaurant in sight to disturb the charm. Downtown has a small brick paved square for sitting and chatting by the trim fountain. If you venture out on a Saturday morning, the square hosts a farmers market where you can pickup fruits, vegetables and crafts. It is a great place to just sit and enjoy the atmosphere. We always take a short stroll to see what might be new before picking a spot to eat.

Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café

Robert and I have eaten here before with the kids on a Saturday afternoon, but nothing could prepare us for the fun and rowdy crowd on a Friday night. On Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night live music is provided by Schunkel Abend – Jimmy & Eckhard. On the night we went there was an accordion, cow bells, and spoons.

One of the more memorable songs is A Toast to Your Health or Well-being!

Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit,
der Gemütlichkeit
Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit,
der Gemütlichkeit
Eins, zwei, drei, g’suffa!
Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi
Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi

Willow Tree ist WUNDERBAR!!
Prost!

The Drinks and Food

Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café offers an exciting selection of German draft beers, wine, and German appetizers, meals, and desserts, with a heaping dose of *Gemutlichkeit!

We skipped the appetizers, but started off directly with two refreshing draft beers – 0.3 liter Köstritzer Schwarzbier and 0.5liter Tucher Hefeweizen. Fabulous.  Drink sizes range from 0.3 liter, all the way to the massive 2 and 3 liter “Das Boot”! If you’re going to order “Das Boot” your table will have to meet certain qualifications before being allowed to partake. (Here’s a clue:  bring friends, and be ready to follow the rules and traditions of Das Boot). For dinner Jessica ordered the Bavarian Wurst Teller (one sausage and two sides) with Weisswurst (a lightly-seasoned veal and pork sausage), Heaven & Earth (mashed potatoes with sautéed onions, bacon & apples), and Potato Dumplings (two dumplings with crouton centers, covered in Rahm gravy).  Robert decided on the Jäger Schnitzel (Topped with sautéed onions and mushrooms and glazed  in a rich pan sauce) with a side of Gurkensalat (Julienned cucumbers tossed in Kräuter dressing made from herbs and sour cream).  Both were great filling choices to accompany the delicious bier!

For nachspeise (dessert) we ordered the Schnappsberry cheesecake (light as a feather) and a Mousse Cup (heaven in a cup).

Everything was delicious and in large proportions, except the Mousse Cup, but that’s why it’s called a cup.

After Dinner

After dinner we continued our stroll through downtown Sanford and discovered La Siren Gorda (Update August 2016, the restaurant has unfortunately closed). It’s a Mexican restaurant with both indoor seating and a wonderful outdoor patio and seating area with a fire pit and strung lights. We thought we would be getting a nice cup of coffee, but didn’t see it anywhere on the menu.  I’m sure the coffee menu was around somewhere though. We ended up sipping on mixed drinks and sitting by the fire pit doing something we don’t often get to do as parents of 3 and 6 year olds – talking! It was a nice and relaxing way to end the evening.
